Reading/Leeds 2011 line-up announced

The first bands have been announced for Reading/Leeds 2011. My Chemical Romance, The Strokes and Muse are the main stage headliners. Tickets are available via www.seetickets.com. Weekend tickets cost a whopping £192.50, plus booking fees and postage. Car parking is £5. That's one hell of a lot of money for what looks like one of the weakest line-ups in living memory.

As rain continues to fall, and parts of the campsite are reportedly under water, Reading Festival organisers insist they will be able to keep any waterlogging under control via the use of Thames sluice-gates and tons of wood-chips. The good news is that the forecast is for the rain to pass through overnight, with a drier day tomorrow and sunny spells on Saturday before the rain returns on Sunday evening. Kings of Leon and Kasabian will headlining this year's V Festival, which takes place at Hylands Park, Chelmsford and Weston park, near Stafford on Saturday and Sunday 21st and 22nd August. Also appearing on the main stage are Stereophonics, Paul Weller, Editors, The Courteeners, Passion Pit, Faithless, The Kooks, Paolo Nutini, Madness, Skunk Anansie and Pixie Lott. David Guetta and The Prodigy will headline the 4 Music stage, with Florence and the Machine, Scouting For Girls, White Lies and Shed Seven among the support. Cheryl Cole and The Pet Shop Boys will headline the third stage with La Roux, Groove Armada, The Charlatans, Mika, Goldfrapp and The Sugababes also appearing. Tickets go on sale on 5th march. McCarteny and more for Hard Rock Calling

Sir Paul McCarteny has been announced as the Sunday night headliner at Hard Rock Calling in Hyde Park on 27th June. It will be one of four big dates he plays this summer. The others are the Isel of Wight Festival (Sunday 13th June), Hampden Park, Glasgow (Sunday 20th June) and the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff (Saturday 26th June). Also confirmed for the Friday (25th June) at Hard Rock Calling are Ben Harper, Wolfmother and The Gaslight Anthem, all supporting previously announced headliners Pearl Jam. Muse, Eminem and Kasabian will headline this year's T in the Park which takes place from 9th-11th July. It will bw Eminem's first UK show in five years. Other acts announced include Jay-Z, Biffy Clyro, La Roux, Florence and the Machine, The Coral, Dizzee Rascal, Faithless, The Proclaimers, Calvin Harris, Skunk Anansie, Stereophonices, The Gossip, The Prodigy and Wolfmother. Stevie Wonder to headline Glastonbury

The legendary Stevie Wonder looks like being the Sunday night headliner at this year's Glastonbury Festival after Michael Eavis let slip that negotiations were almost finalised with the star. Muse will headline the Saturday, with U2 on the Friday.

The UK Sonisphere Festival at Knebworth, which runs from Friday 3oth July to Sunday 1st August will see headlining appearances from iron maiden and Rammstein, while other bands announced so far are Motley Crue, Alice Cooper, Placebo, Slayer, Iggy & The Stooges, The Cult, Papa Roach, Anthrax, Fear Factory and Bring Me The Horizon. Henry Rollins will give a spoken-word performance.

This year's Download Festival takes place at Donington Park on Friday 11th to Sunday 13th June. AC/DC headline on the Friday, with Them Crooked Vultures, Wolfmother, Bullet For My Valentine, Motorhead, Deftones, Stone Temple Pilots, Volbeat, and Megadeth also confirmed to appear. Tickets with weekend camping cost £170 (no doubt with a booking fee on top... and probably a car-parking charge, too...). The organisers have also banned flags on poles from the arena following a number of complaints last year. The capacity for this year's event will be 111,000, making Download the second-largest festival in the UK, after Glastonbury.

All tickets for the 40th anniversary Glastonbury Festival in 2010 are now sold out. Any returns will go on sale at some point in 2010. U2 are the only confirmed headliners, playing the Friday night in their first-ever Glasto appearance. Also confirmed are The Wurzels, Dub Pistols and Squeeze.

The 2010 Isle of Wight Festival, which run from Friday 11th June to Sunday 13th June has announced its first acts. Jay-Z will headline the Friday night; Saturday will be topped by The Strokes, with Blondie second on the bill. Sunday sees Pink in the 'special guest' slot (presumably second on the bill) with the headliner to be announced. Additionally, Orbital will play on the Saturday (second stage headliners, by the look of it), and Squeeze will play on the Tursday night, which will be available for weekend campers only. Nirvana at Reading 1992 released

Nirvana's legendary 1992 headline appearance at reading has finally been released on CD, DVD and a limited edition DVD/CD double-pack. The DVD contains the full show, while the CD omits 'Love Buzz' and almost all of the between-song stage talk - presumably because there wasn't quite enough space for the whole show on one CD. 'Love Buzz' and all the chat are on the DVD, however. The full DVD tracklist is:

Smashing Pumpkins Reading sets online

Smashing Pumpkins are one of a number of artists now allowing recordings of their shows to be freely distributed on the web via The Internet Archive (www.archive.org). Their 1995 and 2007 Reading Festival appearances are available. The 1995 set is from a radio broadcast, and there are two versions of the 2007 show, one an audience recording of most of the show, the other edited highlights from a radio broadcast. Nirvana Reading 1992 show to get official release

Widely bootlegged over the years, Nirvana's legendary final UK show gets an official release on both CD and DVD later this year. It's not clear at the moment whether it will be edited highlights or the full show, but is scheduled to be released on 16th November 2009.

Eagle-eyed readers may have noticed that there have been no updates to the site for some months. Unfortunately, my hard drive failed, taking with it the site, all my work, and (even more importantly to me) over three years' worth of photographs... nothing was recoverable. I've had rather a lot of work to do in catching up as a result, and fatreg.com has, unfortunately, had to take a back seat.

I'm also not going to Reading this year... the first time I've been unable to since I first went way back in 1983. Work commitments have got in the way for the first time.

If you've been this year, please post your thoughts or a review in the forum (you don't have to register).

Normal service is about to be resumed, and I hope to be back at the Festival next summer.

Reformed Blur to perform in Hyde Park

Blur will play a live show in Hyde Park in Summer 2009.
Graham Coxon will join Alex James, Dave Rowntree and Damon Albarn onstage for this first time since their Royal Festival Hall performance in 2000.
The concert will take place at London's Hyde Park on Friday 3rd July 2009, and tickets will be on general sale from 9am Friday 12th December 2008 at www.livenation.co.uk.
All tickets are £45.00, are limited to six per person, and subject to a booking fee.
Not sure if this is part of the O2 Wireless Festival, which last year was three days, but this year's festival is listed as being Sat 4th July and Sunday 5th July.

The latest issue of Word (on sale now) has a half-page review of Reading (plus some glaring historical inaccuracies concerning the 1986 line-up...). Additionally, the magazine contains a reprint of John Peel's review of the 1977 festival, which is taken from a forthcoming book of the great man's writings for various magazines, and consists mostly of his recollections from the bar, rather than actually seeing many bands. Sounds like a great way to experience the festival to me...

Reading gets new festival

The Reading Festival site is to host a new "world music" festival. The two-day Heavenly Planet Festival will take place on 10th and 11th July 2009, and is expected to attract 15,000 people. The local council have committed to the new festival for three years.

Council praises Glastonbury

Mendip District Council have praised the organisers of Glastonbury, describing it as "possibly the best managed event of its kind in the world. We know how important it is to Mendip and how important it is to ensure it remains one of the best in the world," added Mendip councillor Tom Killen. The festival has also come in for praise from Avon and Somerset Constabulary, the Environment Agency, Somerset Primary Care Trust and Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue.

Glastonbury 2009 headliners "confirmed soon"

Emily Eavis has stated that next year's Glastonbury headliners will be confirmed soon, but states that they don not include (as rumoured) Coldplay, U2 or The Rolling Stones. She did, however, confirm that Franz Ferdinand and The Ting Tings will be playing. Bookmakers are currently making Radiohead favourites, followed by Oasis and Muse. Tickets for next year's festival go on sale on 5th October.

Reading 1978 remembered in Uncut

The latest issue of Uncut (on sale now) has a one-page feature on the 1978 Reading Festival, which saw the arrival of punk acts, including Sham 69, Penetration and The Jam at the festival. The article has several eye-witness accounts of the festival and some pictures. Trawl around the darker recesses of the internet and you may find the TV broadcast of that year's festival, too, which is well worth seeing if you get the chance.

Ash to release 1996 Reading show

Ash are to release their 1996 Reading Festival set as part of an expanded "collectors' edition" re-issue of their debut album "1977". The triple-CD set also includes the mini album "Trailer", a live set recorded for Austrailian radio and a disc of rarities, B-sides and demos. Expected release date is 3rd November. Reading/Leeds review in NME

Today's NME contains a large review of the Reading/Leeds Festivals (strangely no mention of Black Tide - what were they thinking about?!). Also, the now traditional aerial photos of the festival sites. Try and spot your tent. It's actually pretty thin coverage of the festivals, with a bias towards Leeds, and I couldn't find any mention of The Ting Tings storming set, either. On sale now, for £2.20.

White car park fire

12 cars were destroyed and nine damaged in a fire in White car park at Reading. The fire was apparently caused by a festival-goer attempting to have a barbecue by their car. This set fire to the dry grass in the field and quickly spread to other parked cars. What a moron. Coming back to the car park to find your car destroyed would really ruin your weekend. If anyone knows anything about the fire, or who started it, contact Berkshire Police.

Good news for White car park ticket holders - Reading organisers have built a foot bridge across the river, so the wait for ferries should be eliminated. On the downside, however, you will now have to exchange your ticket for a wristband upon entrance to the site (ie when you're loaded to the gills with tents, sleeping bags etc). There are a number of other changes to the general campsite layout, which can be seen on the latest site map (click to view/download, depending on your browser). Classic Rock Festival special on sale

Actually, this has been out a few weeks, but it's still available in the shops. A one-off magazine, it covers all manner of festivals from Woodstock to Reading, and everything in between. The free cover-mounted DVD is disappointing (basically a sampler for DVDs in the "Live at Montreaux" series) but the mag itself is thoroughly excellent with superb photos. £5.99 from most retailers.

Meatloaf slates UK festivals

Porky rocker Meatloaf (left) has slated UK festivals, branding them "stupid" and claiming the crowds are "apes". In an interview the fat old has-been says: "We played with Jefferson [Starship] at one of those stupid English festivals, and I do call them stupid because people behave like apes who haven't eaten a banana in a week. I refuse to play them." He's referring to the 1988 Reading Festival where he was pelted with bottles of piss. He stopped playing to ask "You wanna rock 'n' roll, or you wanna throw stuff?" He was promptly hit in the face by a flagon of cider and stormed off. Presumably like a bat out of hell...

Do Reading in style... at a price

Fed up with a soggy tent that falls down on Friday night? Now you can do Reading (or one of several other festivals) in style thanks to MyHab, who will have special MyHab areas in the campsite with prefabricated 'tents' made of waterproofed cardboard. They put them up and take them down, too, leaving the commited festival-goer more drinking time. The sites will also include hot showers, too. Each MyHab sleeps two people. Sounds brilliant, but (and it's a big 'but') each MyHab costs £240 for the weekend, ie £120 per person. Ouch! Noel Gallagher slams Jay-Z Glasto headline slot

Oasis frontman Noel Gallagher has slated the decision to book Jay-Z as a headliner at Glastonbury, claiming the decision is the cause of slow ticket sales for this year's festival. The singer said "If it ain't broke don't fix it," he said. "If you start to break it then people aren't going to go. I'm sorry, but Jay-Z? No chance. Glastonbury has a tradition of guitar music and even when they throw the odd curve ball in on a Sunday night you go 'Kylie Minogue?' I don't know about it. But I'm not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. It's wrong."

However, a more likely cause is that there are simply so many festivals these days that music fans are spoilt for choice. And Glastonbury is getting so big now that over-crowding could be part of the problem. One artist seems unlikely to be the cause of people not buying tickets - with several hundred act to choose from you can always see someone else, rather than the main stage headliner.

The first line-up details will be announced at the same time, with 0rganiser Melvin Benn claiming this year's festival will "blow everything else out of the water." Given that this is the ridiculous hyperbole that normally precedes the headliners announcement, let's not hold our breath.

T In The Park main acts announced

This summer’s T In The Park festival (11-13 July) will be headlined by The Verve (Friday), Rage Against The Machine (Saturday) and REM (Sunday).

Kings of Leon are also on the Main Stage on the Sunday, Kaiser Chiefs headline the NME/Radio 1 Stage on the Saturday, with The Prodigy headlining on the Sunday. The Pigeon Detectives and The Raconteurs will also play on the stage over the weekend.

Other bands announced are The Enemy, Interpol, Ian Brown, Primal Scream and The Fratellis

Download headliners announced

The headliners and main acts for this summer's Download Festival (13-15 June) have been announced. Kiss, The Offspring and Lostprophets will top the bill over the three days, while among the supporting line-up are Judas Priest, Motorhead, HIM and Rise Against. Metal tent pegs banned at Glastonbury

Festival goers at Glastonbury this summer will be forced to use bio-degradable tent pegs made from potato starch in a bid to keep the site free from abandoned metal pegs which harm the cows that graze in the fields after the revellers have gone. Apparently, organiser Michael Eavis has a "skipful" of left-over metal pegs from previous festivals. Quite how potato starch pegs cope in rock-hard ground is uncertain, but given Glastonbury's reputation for rain-sodden ground, that probably won't be an issue...

Neil Diamond to headline Glastonbury

Legendary crooner Neil Diamond has been confirmed as Sunday night headliner for this summer's Glastonbury Festival (27-29 June). Organiser Michael Eavis also said that an American hip-hop artist will headline the Saturday night. Jay-Z or Kanye West are tipped for this slot.

While not giving away any specific details, festival organiser Melvyn Benn has said that all three headliners will be American acts, and that all have played the festival before but "not necessarily as headliners." Rage Against The Machine, Green Day, Foo Fighters, Metallica, The Strokes, Marilyn Manson and The White Stripes are all strong possibilities as previous headliners, while The Killers, My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy are possibilities for those that haven't previously topped the line-up.

Benn also stated that he has recently bought a piece of land that he'd previously hired for the festival as a way of ensuring the long-term future of the event and that they were putting more roads in on the site and would be making the main arena a lot bigger for this year's event. So, that'll either mean less overcowding in the arena or more people allowed in.

Also rumoured to be playing are The Zutons, though they are keeping a very low-profile at the moment. MPs reject call to ban internet ticket touts

Once again, after much debate a government committee has done sweet FA. In this case, they have rejected the idea of banning online ticket touts, despite recognising that there are "dubious practices" in place among some agencies. Instead they have recommended that artists and venues profit from the proceeds of these inflated ticket sales. Stupidly, they seem to have targetted sites such as ebay, rather than the organised touting agencies which buy tickets in bulk purely in order to sell on at huge profits.

The simplest solution would have been to make the selling of tickets above face value an offence. But no, we've got the usual ineffectual waffle.

Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis made the frankly daft suggestion of pre-registering and putting photos on tickets, which doesn't seem really practical - can you imagine the queues at venues as everyone has their photo checked on entering? It's one thing to pre-register for a big festival, quite another for a gig in a smaller venue where you may not decide months in advance that you're going.

One thing's for certain, organised online touting will continue to blight the concert-going experience in this country.

Sex Pistols for Isle of Wight?

Sex Pistols, who recently played seven UK dates (five nights at Brixton Academy, one in Manchester and one in Glasgow) are tipped to headline the Saturday night (14th June) at next year's Isle of Wight Festival. The band are also rumoured to be headlining the Peace & Love Festival in Borlänge, Sweden in June next year. However, this is all news to John Lydon, who says that talks are "underway" but that nothing is, as yet, confirmed. Watch this space. Maybe Reading/Leeds would be a possibility?

Iron Maiden have announced the dates on their epic "Somewhere Back In Time World Tour 2008". Despite stating at Donington earlier in 2007 that they would be back in England next summer "in a field with pyramids" the band have announced just one show - at the home of English rugby, Twickenham Stadium, on Saturday 5th July. Tickets are on sale now, and range in price from £37.50 - £50.00.

The Police to headline Isle of Wight 2008

The recently reformed Police will close next summer's Isle of Wight Festival, which runs from 13th to 15th June. It will be the band's only UK festival appearance, and indicates that their reunion will last longer than the current world tour, which has seen them play to over 1.5 million people. Beer runs out for Carling Weekend

The Reading and Leeds Festivals will no longer be known as The Carling Weekend following the end of the brewing giant's sponsorship deal after nine years. This means that Carling will no longer be the official beer of the festival, so there might be some halfway decent booze on offer from next year! Bring back the Burrow Hill cider! As ever, artists are being rumoured for next year's festival. Candidates so far include Kasabian, The Verve, Rage Against The Machine and My Chemical Romance. I suspect The Verve are extremely likely to play, given the success of their reunion shows. Kasabian and MCR would also seem like near-certainties. Official announcements will appear when the first tickets go on sale in the spring - usually early April.

Reading Festival safe

The future of the Reading Festival appears safe after organisers Festival Republic bought 65-acres of the site. This brings Festival Republic's land ownership of the site to 191 acres. The rest belongs to Reading Borough Council. Festival Republic boss Melvin Benn said "This is a very important piece of land and acquiring it was essential to the continuation of the Reading Festival."

Let's hope they improve the quality of the facilities now they own the site - and build a bridge across the river to the car park!

The latest issue of the NME has the results of a reader poll to discover such things as the best festival band of 2007, the longest toilet queue etc. On sale now for £2.10 - the poll can't be any worse than last week's shoddy review of Reading, which (in typical NME style) majored on the sort of over-hyped here-today-gone-tomorrow bands the rag is so keen on. Nine Inch Nails (the band of the weekend) only got a tiny mention.
